I almost always crop it out of pictures these days, because to me it's like a BIG BRIGHT FLASHING STROBE LIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF MY FOREHEAD. And I don't care for it at all.
See my mole, see what I mean? It's there, on my face, and it's round and big, and ugly. And I hate it.
I was born with this mole. It was cute and little and never bothered me until it started growing.
My mom always hated it though, and she talked me into getting it removed when I was 19. I went to see a dermatologist, and he REFUSED to remove it. He scolded me almost, he said it was a beauty mark. Then he pulled out a huge medical book and showed me god-awful pictures of keloid scars, and told me that he was sure the scar would be worse than the mole.
Mom was irritated, but appeased. This was good enough for me.
In the last few years though, my mole has been growing. It's so big now that it's all I see when I see pictures of me. So a few months ago I tried to get it removed again.
The dermatologist said the scar would be worse than the mole, and I told her I didn't care. She couldn't remove it though, because it's on my face, so she sent me to a plastic surgeon. I was feeling hope.
The plastic surgeon said he would remove it, but insurance wouldn't cover one cent of the procedure because it's not suspicious. I almost begged. 'But, it's growing' I said. He said he understood, but it was a definite no go. I cried, and he seemed compassionate. He also gave me an estimate of what it would cost to have it removed... I cried even more.
I looked at this millionaire surgeon, with big tears in my eyes, and wondered if he would remove it for free if I was a crying child in a third world country. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't.
So, if you meet me someday and see a golf ball sized mole don't be alarmed. Please don't stare. It could be worse. Like, if it had long hairs growing out of it or something.
For now though, those hairs are just growing on my chin. But, don't get me started on chin hairs, that's a whole other can of worms.

Oh. Thats sooo terrible to feel so self conscious about things like that.
Maybe you can talk to a plastic surgeon about it? They would also be more trained to handle any scar issues. Just an idea.
Um. As for the chin hair? I can TOTALLY relate. I feel like I have thorns growing out of my face. Its horrid.
I have a mole on the side of my nose. I went through the same thing with trying to get it removed. The dermatologist told me too that the scar would be worse than the mole. It drives me nuts, but others have said they've never noticed it until I pointed it out. We are probably WAY more conscious of these things than anyone else is.
Piper, what mole? All I see is a beautiful face, big eyes, great hair and full lips. All without makeup, that is so not fair! You are a beauty. So there you go.
I've never noticed, and couldn't care less! You're beautiful!
Don't make the same mistake I made. My scar is WAY FAR worse than what was originally there. HUGE MISTAKE!!

I would have to agree with Jenn. Very jealous that you can look that great w/o makeup! And love the curly hair too!
I know what you mean about areas that bug us. If I happened on a couple thousand dollars, I would be at the plastic surgeon's office for something too! ;)
I didn't even know what you were talking about at first -- had to go back up and look at your picture again! Secondly, it can't be that big! fyi,my husband had a bigger one almost in the EXACT spot and got it removed in Spain. He is glad it is gone and scar? Not really.
Never would have seen it.
Piper, you are so precious.
Still barely see it.
Remember, God makes no mistakes.
Love ya
First of all -- I didn't even notice it. You're beautiful just the way you are... (still I totally understand when we obsess about something... I had a tiny skin tag on my eyelid that drove me nuts... no one else noticed it but me and my mom....) and I had to have it removed.
Second... don't get me started on the man-hairs growing out of my chin!
sorry but that was so funny! Maybe you should start a fund...a tip jar for donations?? I never noticed the mole - ever! I had one on my eyebrow too. It just kept getting bigger. I had it removed when Big D was in the Air Force. It totally messed up the flow of my eyebrow but make up goes a long way. Don't listen to them when they say the scar will be worse! btw you're beautiful as ever. Hope all's well too. You crack me up daily on Twitter.
When I was a teenager, I had a Cindy Crawford type mole (except not sexy) on my face on my right cheek. A boy in my art class drew a caricature of me, and of course, he made my mole look ginormous! I went home crying and begged my mom to get me a doctor's appointment. So she did, and they did remove it. (It was suspicious, but thankfully, no cancer.)
Anyway, my kids have looked at my old pictures and pointed at it, and asked, "What is that?";)
As for your chin hairs, Piper, I am right there with you. I have to keep tweezers in the house, in the car, and in my purse. I swear, I can practically grow a full goatee in the amount of time that it takes me to walk from the house to the car. Seriously.:)
Oh Piper - I totally feel you pain. I have moles upon moles up moles. Those I can handle, it's the skin tags that drive me insane. That, and the plucking of the chin hairs. Ugh. Getting old is no fun.
I understand piper.
I have three moles on my face - one at the end of my eyebrow that is raised and "yucky" by my standards, a flatter, more beauty mark kind below my lips, and a ginormous appendagey one on the side of my chin. And guess what, it DOES get hairs coming out of it (EEEEEWWWWWWW!!).
(hugs) keep an eye on this growth and just keep at 'em.
Uhh... I didn't notice it. But we are always our own worst critics. :) I hate my nose. H A T E I T.
umm okay. but pardon me while i laugh my ass off...
not at you, of course. with you. i'm laughing with you.
i can hardly see the thing, btw.
glad to see your mood has lightened!
well i am one of the few men commenting on your blog, and let me say you have all the things that truely make a woman beautiful and why god created women in the first place
I know you've probably heard it before, but you're a beautiful woman, inside and out. The mole can't detract from that.
I sometimes pick my nose in public.
(I wouldn't have noticed had you not said anything.)
It's not as noticeable to other people as it probably is to you. You're gorgeous!
As everyone else said, I definitely didn't notice it and had to scroll back up to see what you were talking about. Still, it sucks to have something that makes you self conscious all the time :-\
And chin hairs? Yeah. I already have two that keep coming back. TWO! I'm too young for this.
oh dear you mentioned a whole other can of worms, you don't have WORMS too , do you bliss, piper, dear, sweettie
Piper,
Sorry you are so concious of your mole...I have to agree with another poster who said it is not as visible to US as it is to YOU. Not that that helps all that much.
I must say though, that you are beautiful, and there is NO WAY that I can believe from this photo that you are older than me...I asked some people in my office how old they thought you were, and the guess is early 20's (when I originally saw these photos, I thought even younger! Even though I already knew you to be older.)
Just sayin' :0)
Love the picture! I agree no fair to look that beautiful without make-up! Joe loves to point out my chin hairs, ugh.
Do you know how fab that picture is?
Isn't it awful how we do that to ourselves? Look in the mirror and the only things that flash at us are the things we hate? I'm having that problem lately too. Can I just tell you that it isn't as noticeable to others as it is to you, and that that picture of you, au natural, is so beautiful that it should be entered in a photo contest? xoxo
You're so adorable I don't think I would have noticed it.
But try another derm if you want it gone that badly. I finally found one that remove my arm if I asked and submit it to a lab for review just so my insurance would cover it. All it takes is finding the right doc.
Try a General Surgeon. They also do this type of thing and are used to billing insurance companies unlike plastic surgeons who prefer CASH!
My hubby removed my moles at his office, and one turned out to be pre-cancerous. They can't say that it isn't suspicious if they haven't biopsied it. If it is growing then that is a good enough reason to remove. You will have a small scar which will fade. Go see another doctor. Plastic surgeons are a rip-off!
It's really weird that they won't remove it when it's growing. That certainly sounds suspicious to me...
And I know you don't like pictures of it, but can you take like one a week and then show them to the doctor? Maybe that would be a bit more convincing (and for your insurance).
good luck.
How come my chin hairs keep growing? :) I'm not a guy here!
Chin hairs. Moles.
We should seriously start a support group . . .
I won't point out the mole on your forehead if you don't point out the one on my neck. My 3yo has called it a nipple. In public. No lie.
My grandma had a mole on her back.
It was alive....once, when I was helping her get dressed, cause, she was old and stuff, her mole bit me!
But Piper, you are so beautiful. You have the most amazing smile, the cutest nose, dazzling eyes and lovely hair. You really do not need to change a single thing. I totally agree with the comments above, that is a truly lovely photograph indeed!!!!!!!
I do know what you mean about seeing things on oneself, magnified a million times. I was born with a harelip and underwent over 20 major plastic surgery operations to put it right during my childhood. Even though I look pretty much average now, I still look in the mirror and think I look like a complete freak... resulting in the fact that I have no self confidence or self esteem at all.... hence, still being single at 36...lol!!!
Warmest wishes ~ Graham :)
