Move Over Cupid, Make Way for the Tooth Fairy

The boy keeps losing teeth, tonight he pulled the wiggliest one all by himself. Notice the blood, he is really proud of that blood.

Last week Jackson had to have a tooth pulled at the dentist, and tonight he pulled another one. Tomorrow we are going to the dentist yet again... pediatric dentistry is a racket!

There is a magazine in the waiting room that I have been enjoying. The Smithsonian special issue, from Fall 2007... '37 Under 36 - America's Young Innovators'. (it's either that or Parent magazine, and I'd rather shoot my foot with a musket than read that mind numbing crap... I'm enjoying not having babies, thank you very much) I've been reading about a 33 year old Anthropologist who spends her days scraping the last remaining unfossilized Dodo bird head to recover DNA. She gets to fly to remote locations all around the world, searching for more unfossilized Dodo bones. (*coughs loud and mutters 'waste of time'*) She knows she won't be able to clone a Dodo, and doesn't want to, yet she believes this research is of utmost import, and so does Smithsonian, apparently.

It's fascinating to read about. I can't help but think about my life, I'm almost her age. I would give anything to be able to travel the globe, and have it financed... I could think of all kinds of crazy things to look for... adventure being chief among them.

So, that's how I will spend my Valentine's Day this year. Reading about a woman searching for something dead and gone... it's a good reminder for me, if I look at it as an analogy for life. I am not going to spend my 30's looking for something that was alive in the past... I'm moving into my future with the promise of things to come.

Tonight though, I have to remember to be the Tooth Fairy... I forgot once, and found this note on my bedside table the next day...

Oh my gosh, this is so funny because you have to go and read what I posted today!!
Emma loses her first tooth tomorrow, and not naturally, and she is all about the Tooth Fairy!

That note is priceless!!
My twin girls are about a year away from the tooth thing. They can't stand to have their nails clipped, so I can imagine the horror that loose teeth and dentistry are going to bring!

You are right about looking forward rather than back. I've spent the last 2 years trying to get past having my second open heart surgery. It's been completely unproductive, of course.

Seriously though, imagine getting paid for dusting off a dead bird. You get to travel, and you get a tan at the same time!!

Ha! What a smart kiddo you've got.
Don't forget to read my bloggie today, Valentine! ;o)

Haha. He is one smart cookie. Good luck a the dentist tomorrow! You can tell him that I'm about to get 4 of mine surgically removed from my skull. Could he possibly find out (from the Tooth Fairy) how much those are worth? Cause I'm thinking it's not bad.

I love the note. That is too precious.

Happy Valentine's Day, Piper!

I love how your son plays along while acknowledging that he KNOWS who the Tooth Fairy really is! That's hilarious!

This is great on so many levels! My (almost) 7 Year old has 4 loose teeth and he refuses to wiggle them. He just doesn't care.

Plus, he doesn't like blood. The Whuse (how do you spell that?)

That note is fantastic! I nearly spat my tea all over the computer. Excellent -- Tooth Fairy's Mom will be in Time Out!

And love your Valentine's Day -- looking forward, not back. Awesome!

Piper, I love this post. I love the optimism in it. I love the symbolism in it. I love it. I love your sense of adventure, yet your ability to know that your boys need you here and now (for now). This time is short and they will be all grown up soon (with lots of permanent teeth) and the globe, oceans, mountains, valleys, fields and rivers will still be there. They will just start calling louder when the time is right.
I love your boy's hilarious, not-so-subtle note. Why didn't he just say - HEY MOM! YOU OWE ME BIG! ADD 20% ON TOP!
I am thinking of you today on this bogus holiday (although my hubby did surprise me with a spa gift certificate - all I got for him is one of those singing cards with a Johnny Cash song) as I know it tugs at the heart. Just think of it as the V.D. it is - something to be avoided.
KEEP BELIEVING

I love it when they lose those baby teeth . . . and they are replaced by teeth that look about 6 times too big for their face!!

Cracking up over the note, our tooth fairy is one lazy girl that can never seem to get it together. Which costs her a lot of guilt tooth money.

I love how he calls you "young lady" as if he's your father or elder or something! ;)
I meant to say I really appreciated your post about Jeremy earlier. You write so well and I was really feelin' it.
I wish for a you a rainbow or a pretty bird or something special like that today that just stops you in your tracks and lets you know that you are loved!

Without the note, that Tooth Fairy would be lost.

I've been told now that my daughter is 11, that our tooth fairy is lame. They get new paste, floss and a brush.

Dude. Cheap fairy presents. hehe.

We once forgot to have the "Tooth Fairy" visit our second son (those poor second kids...always getting the short end of the stick). He was sooo upset, of course.

The next night the "Tooth Fairy" left a typed note, along with a $5 bill, apologizing for her lateness, as there was an epidemic of lost teeth in France the night before.

He totally went for it. Yay for creativity! :)

I love that he left you a little reminder! Ahhhh, kids....

My grandmother is THE BEST when it comes to pulling out wiggly teeth. I'm hoping I can channel some of her energy in that respect when it comes time for my girls to lose their baby teeth!

You are so good at finding these poignant metaphors for life. I love that. Good for you! And, if it makes you feel better, I have forgotten to be the tooth fairy so many times. I've pulled some fast moves without giving up her identity. That note is a crack up. You must save it forever.

LOL great note... My 7yo refuses to leave his teeth... He wants to keep them and puts notes under his pillow...

Doing a little blog hopping with baby..

WOW! That note is classic.

And I think you're much better off not searching the globe for unusable DNA. I mean, being Mom is better than scraping the skull of something dead (although motherhood has comparable hygiene some days). Plus, you're NOT searching. And that's something that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Good post :)

The gap where the tooth was looks painful - the note is absolutely amazing. But how does he know you are the tooth fairy? I thought it was a secret - like Santa. Shhhhh, don't tell anyone else!

That note is so cute. My boy has done that a couple of times too (although not as expressively) just to make sure the Tooth Fairy knows where the tooth is.
Great post, Piper!

Oh my goodness, I've got 7 and 10 year old boys and the teeth have been falling out all over the place lately! Not only did I have to remember "letting Santa in" on Christmas Eve, I had to "let the Tooth Fairy in" as well! More of the same on Valentine's Day (not letting Santa in though, just the Tooth Fairy, in case you needed that clarification).

That note is so adorable! My son is 9 and now when he loses a tooth he just puts his hand out for a dollar. Smart-ass kid.
